Royal Gorge, Canon City, Co

The Royal Gorge is about an hour drive south and west from Colorado Springs. The Royal Gorge is the location of the world's highest suspension bridge. The bridge is 1053 feet above the Arkansas River. The amazing thing is that this bridge was built in 1929.

There is a lot to do when you go to the Royal Gorge. You can walk, drive, or ride a trolley across the bridge. We chose to walk only because the trolley was broken down the day we went. It is actually a little intimidating since not only are you very high up but the surface of the bridge is made of wood which is splintered. There is also a funicular that takes you 1500 feet down to the river in 5 minutes. The funicular was built in 1931. A more modern way to see the bridge and the gorge is via the arial tram which was built in 1968. The park also offers a wildlife park, shows, wagon rides, etc.

One tip if you decide to go to the Royal Gorge from Colorado Springs....take the Tram from the north east entrance at the gift shop to the south west side. We decided to walk across the bridge and take the tram back. From the bridge to the tram on the south west side is a steep 1/2 mile plus walk. It would have been much easier to take the tram first, wander down hill through the wildlife area, then walk across the bridge.
