Animals in Rocky Mountain National Park

Longhorn Sheep having a snack

Curious Chipmunk

Herd of Elk grazing

Stellar Jay

The wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park was amazing. Shortly after we drove into the park, we saw a small herd of elk and a lone longhorn sheep. After a couple of days in the park and surrounding area, we had seen hundreds of elk grazing inside the park and in neighboring areas.

After a picnic lunch, we took a walk around Sprague Lake. When Kevin stopped on a bench to get a rock out of his shoe, a curious chipmunk came right up to him to see what was going on. We were concerned that the little guy was so interested in a human. We thought he must have gotten fed by a human in the past.

On our walk to Bear Lake, we saw the beautiful blue bird above. We are not sure what type of bird it is since we have never seen one in the east before. We have several books on identifying birds but the books are for birds on the east coast.

In addition to the animals we were able to photograph, we saw several more birds and animals we could not photograph. The park is a great place for wildlife viewing.

  1. The blue bird is a Steller Jay. You see them a lot out West. We were really impressed the first time we saw the.
