Folks playing in the snow in JUNE at Paradise Visitors Center
Red fox strolling along the road
When we visited Mt. Rainier, we spent a lot of time driving. We stayed in Packwood because of its convenience to both Mount St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. What we didn't know when we selected Packwood was that the entrance to Mt. Rainier was closed due to a mudslide. This meant instead of a 7 mile drive into the park, we had a 50 mile drive into the park. Although, that made our day a bit longer, it was still worth the trip.
If we didn't stay in Packwood, we most likely would not have driven up the east side to the White River entrance. The east side and in Packwood itself is really the only place we saw the whole mountain. You could also get a pretty good view of the glaciers from the east.
The southern slope of Mt. Rainier, where the Paradise Visitor Center and Lodge is housed, was pretty much covered with clouds. It was quite interesting to see all the snow and all the crazy people playing in snow with flip flops and canvas shoes. The highlight of our trip to the southern slope of Mt. Rainier was watching the foxes trot along the road.
