Death Valley, California
We entered Death Valley from CA 178 at the south. It was over 70 miles from when you enter Death Valley until you get to the Visitor's Center with water and other facilities. Fortunately, we had filled up both of our 750 milliliter water bottles and a gallon jug of water. It was amazing how much water we went through without even getting out of the car. Just driving makes you thirsty in Death Valley.
We stopped at the lowest point in the US, Badwater, which was named because even mules refused to drink the salty water. It is amazing that water even exists in this desert. The water is very salty but there are fish and insects that have adapted to the harsh environment.
While we were in Death Valley, the temperature was in the high 90's. It was so dry that it did not feel that hot. We were fortunate because there had been cloud cover that kept the temperature from reaching 100. On many summer days the temperature is above 100. Death Valley has set record temperatures in the US.
Death Valley offers a different kind of beauty. The white salt flats surrounded by mountains that offer many different colors from the minerals are beautiful. There are beautiful mountains, canyons, and sand dunes. It is definitely worth the visit.
